Knock Sensor Failure: Now What?

by: Matthew C. Keegan

Bella Miller skillfully navigated her BMW 735i onto the expressway, dodging a semi that was quickly barreling down on her. Darting over to the left lane she eased up on the accelerator just enough to give herself a little bit of extra room between her car and the Blazer she was now following. Traffic was fairly heavy at this hour of the afternoon, but one kilometer down the road Bella would be able to take the left fork and follow the outer beltway for seven kilometers. Within moments she would be out of rush hour traffic and on her way home.

With the fork fast approaching, Bella turned on her left turn signal and eased her car off of the expressway and onto the ramp leading to the outer beltway. Seeing that traffic was now light, she pressed on the accelerator and immediately felt a bit of hesitation followed by two loud knocks. Perplexed, Bella eased up on the accelerator and moved over to the right hand lane, reduced her speed, before pressing down on the accelerator again. This time, her BMW responded but she could still feel some sense of hesitancy, so she decided to lower her speed the rest of the way home.

Upon entering her driveway, Bella stopped her car and turned off the ignition. Immediately, the engine began to shudder, knock, ping, and shudder again, before making a noise that sounded almost like a sigh, followed by silence. Promptly, Bella grabbed her purse and cell phone and exited the car and ran into her house thinking that it might explode.

What Bella was experiencing was an engine that was in distress. Her BMW’s knock sensor, designed to permit her V8 to run efficiently on lower grade 87 octane gasoline, had failed. This, in turn, was causing her engine to vibrate as the lower grade fuel was not enough power for her car.

Before 1990, many cars did not come equipped with knock sensors. Thus, in order to prevent vibrating, high octane gas would always be a necessity in order for a car to run knock free. Eventually, knock sensors were created that allowed cars -- including Bella’s 735i -- to run on cheaper, low grade gasoline. In addition, the knock sensor had the all important benefit of stopping engine shudder which can ultimately damage a vehicle.

If you are experiencing engine vibration of any type, it could be that your knock sensor has failed. Don’t delay; have your car checked immediately to prevent possible damage. A knock sensor is a fairly cheap to replace part compared to an engine repair which can cost you thousands of dollars.

Subaru Impreza's Much-awaited Majestic Debut

by: Terry Brown

Subaru is making a majestic European presentation of its newest Impreza. Said presentation will be held at the Geneva Motor Show, a fabulous auto show that launches several cars from famed automakers. Said auto show will take place next spring.

Subaru Impreza may be equipped with 1.5 or 2.0 litre atmospheric engines. The latter type of engine can boost out 300 hp. Said engine is only offered in the top version of Subaru Impreza. This new member will traditionally have the famed Subaru Impreza performance parts equipped for four-wheel drive system.

The intercooler for the turbocharge in the most powerful version of Subaru Impreza is incorporated in the front of the engine instead of the usual place which is on top of it. This is done to improve the ventilation of and cooling of the vehicle by providing ample space underneath the hood. Aside from that, it will also reduce centre gravity and improve security against frontal collision.

The idea of softening the bump came from the use of popping-out airbags in the car to lessen impact in times of bumps or collision. Nowadays, it is not only the airbags that contribute to this end. Intercooler in the top version of Subaru Impreza also imbibed this goal.

Hiroshi Mori, in one of the interviews, said “this new car will be easier and cheaper to manufacture than the current generation, but will keep will keep all features of that legendary car. New generation Subaru Impreza hatchback version will receive shortened chassis comparing to the future sedan. This new hatchback Impreza will have more rigid body, than its sedan brother. In addition, this novelty will differ by short butt (a.k.a rear part of the body) and longer nose.”

The guarantee of safer driving plus the comfort of the traditional Subaru cars is fitted in the hottest version of Subaru Impreza with 300hp.

Cling on for the new generation of Subaru Impreza is almost here. It is scheduled to arrive somewhere between the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008. However, you can have a closer look at it in this coming Geneva Motor Show.

2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca: Ugly or Not?

by: Matthew C. Keegan

Okay, Subaru fans…listen up! Do you think that the all new B9 Tribeca is a beautiful vehicle or is it an ugly duckling? As for me, I have mixed feelings. This particular SUV certainly doesn’t look like any other Subaru, nor does it easily get confused with any other SUV on the market. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; let’s take a look at what sets the B9 Tribeca apart from the pack.

The first time I saw Subaru’s new entry up close I first thought it was Porsche’s Cayenne. No, the vehicles don’t look alike, but the B9 Tribeca evoked a similar response for me: like the Cayenne, it represents a major departure from all other models. For example, the B9 Tribeca offers the following:

5 or 7 passenger seating. This is the first Subaru built that will seat more than five adults.

Big prices: The B9’s base price starts at about $32K.

Side curtain airbags for front seating passengers and second seating passengers [except for the person stuck in the middle seat]

All wheel drive, but you knew that already.

A plush interior. Subaru says that leather trimmed upholstery is available as are heated seats, rear cabin air conditioning, and a sliding glass moon roof.

The B9 is built on a stretched Outback platform and at 66.4 inches it is the tallest vehicle made be Subaru. Oddly, it shares the same 3.0L V6 engine as the Outback, so one can only wonder how hard it will work with 7 passengers onboard navigating steep hills and rounding corners?

I searched far and wide for the reason behind the name B9 Tribeca and found nothing definitive. One auto critic contended that the B9 part of the name came from a previous concept car that was shown by Subaru at car shows, while two reports say that the Tribeca part of the name is from the area of New York City that is the TRIangle BEneath CAnal Street neighborhood of Manhattan. Other than the vehicle being built in Indiana, there isn’t any relevancy in the name. One may think that the B9 portion of the name will prove to be more of a nuisance to remember as consumers have a difficult enough time remembering some two syllable model names, let alone two words.

Personally, I think the idea of building a larger Subaru is wise, especially since Subaru owners previously had no where to go beyond the current crop of compact SUVS and cars in their line up. Beyond that I believe the controversial looks and small engine will disappoint buyers and it may take new sheet metal and a beefier engine to stimulate sales.
